Paikpara Indraranga
About thirty years ago, a cultural institution with the art of dramatics at the heart of its being, germinated in a Housing Society in Paikpara, North Kolkata. Indraranga was created as an institution that would reach out to all generations through the language of theatre because there is no stronger social catalyst than the right Play at the right time.
Time flowed at its pace and Indraranga meandered along its shores weaving Plays for its audience. Famous Plays that had been staged elsewhere; Plays that were created within the Indraranga circle; Plays that portrayed the current times; Plays that brought History alive; Plays for kids; Plays for intellectuals; Plays that made you laugh; Plays that made you cry; Plays that made you think; Plays for the sheer pleasure of theatre, Indraranga served them all.
With time, the Troubadour heart of Indraranga started longing to wander into distant lands and sing to unknown people afar, as it did for people close to its roots. However, for a long time Wishes could not morph into Horses, but then, they finally did. It was made possible by the generation who had gotten associated with Indraranga as child-actors and now had grown up to be a generation that spelled Impossible as I’m Possible.
Indraranga revamped into Paikpara Indraranga and rural marketing communications and engaged in IEC programmes sponsored by Government and Corporate to develop itself into a robust, self-sustaining entity. However, Paikpara Indraranga longed to foray into the stage patronized by the theatre-lovers, the common theatre audience and thus started the quest for a Play that Paikpara Indraranga could début with. The luminaries who succored this quest were none other than veteran writer Sunil Gangopadhyay and Theatre legend Shishir Kumar Bhaduri! Amongst the gems in literature Paikpara Indraranga picked up one that would become a One Hundred and Twenty Five Year old marvel as the year turns. This dream entourage was joined in by one of the brightest jewels of Theatre of current times, Debesh Chattopadhyay. Debesh nurtured this dream into a reality called ‘Nihsanga Samraat’ through unimaginable hard-work and an uncompromising attention to detail. Paikpara Indraranga feels indebted to Debesh for his commitment, zeal and sweat. Thus emerged a repertoire of talent from all over Kolkata. Scores of aspiring theatre artists were auditioned to create a troop of budding talent who were then trained in a fortnight long and strenuous workshop to polish and hone their raw thespian skills. Paikpara Indraranga aimed to provide full-time occupation to its troop of artists so that they could engage with their art without having to worry about their daily bread. With this aim, Paikpara Indraranga also aspired to challenge the age-old notion that Theatre cannot be a sustainable profession. Thus, Paikpara Indraranga entered into the world of
Paikpara Indraranga has many more dreams to pursue and many more Plays to play- Plays of various colours and flavours that will enrich both Paikpara Indraranga and its audience. This institution aspires to grow in the company of luminaries of ace intellect and talent. Paikpara Indraranga also nurtures a little dream- to create a centre for cultural education for the children. It will be a platform where children can learn music, poetry, dance, theatre et al which will deepen their intellect and broaden their minds thus equipping them with a different sense to perceive and taste the world around them. With this, Paikpara Indraranga hopes to create a bunch of future world citizens who would be able to bond better with their fellow humans and bring more love and understanding into the world.
We hope that you would support us in our endeavours and cheer for our dreams.
